I am pleased that NYSUNY 2020 recognizes that establishing one, or even two, “flagships” would create fundamental inequalities throughout the SUNY system. Fortunately, NYSUNY 2020 applies to all four of the University Centers, as I argued for in my letter to the governor. The Competitive Challenge Grants will allow the University Centers to expand on their long-term academic and economic development plans.

This is a great opportunity for Binghamton University. As a result of this initiative, they will be able to continue developing strategic partnerships with the goal of state and regional revitalization. This will also allow them to expand their state of the art Innovative Technologies Complex and continue their collaborative work with other campuses such as SUNY Upstate Medical in Syracuse.

While SUNY stands to benefit from these additional resources, I hope that NYSUNY 2020 is just one step towards making system-wide reforms that will help all of SUNY’s campuses become more competitive.

It remains unclear what the future is for the specific UB 2020 proposal.

Governor Cuomo’s appointment of Broome County Executive Barbara Fiala as Commissioner for the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is a recognition of her many achievements in 40 plus years of public service. Her experience as County Clerk and County Executive make her a wise choice to lead this vital agency. As a member of the Transportation Committee in the Assembly, I look forward to continuing to work with her in Albany.

It’s unsustainable and puts our economy at a competitive disadvantage. We have difficult decisions ahead of us, but it’s important we do what’s necessary to put the state on a path to recovery. We must adopt a responsible and on-time budget; the public deserves nothing less.

The no-nonsense, results-orientated approach Governor Cuomo took in his State of the State address today is just what we need to tackle the serious problems our state faces. I was especially pleased to see him focus on Medicaid reform and mandate relief. Controlling state spending and giving local governments and school districts the flexibility to reduce their expenses is the key to providing real tax relief for homeowners, working families and businesses in New York.
