Governor David Paterson announced today that he is ending his campaign. I am hoping that we can now focus exclusively on the state’s fiscal crisis without these political distractions. I am angry and disappointed over the non-stop series of scandals that have crippled the State Capital. We are facing unprecedented budget deficits that must be addressed and we don’t have any more time to waste.

Busy session ahead

Many people are unhappy with state government these days. I can understand why. I’m not happy, either. Sharp partisan divisions and narrow special interest politics have often paralyzed and corrupted the legislative process. To get ourselves out of this mess, we need to change the culture in Albany. We need to build a new and better state government, one that is committed to and capable of meeting the challenges and opportunities of our time.

Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo (D-Endwell) announced the Assembly passed legislation she cosponsored to enact sweeping public authorities reform, stepping up accountability and shedding new light on the more than 700 public authorities operating with startling autonomy throughout New York (A.40012). Public authorities are quasi-governmental agencies created for a public purpose that operate largely without government oversight and with limited public scrutiny.
